Structure Your Essay Topic Around the Main QuestionWhen you are writing an essay, you will find that your course of action is to structure your synthesis essay topic around the main question, that is, the one that you wish to answer. This part of the synthesis essay, therefore, will be essential if you do not want to waste valuable time writing what amounts to a fragmented piece of writing. If, however, you want to have a comprehensive, well-rounded essay that is a joy to read, then the subject matter for your synthesized work must be properly defined.
It might sound strange to speak of defining your subject when it has not been required in any composition class that you have ever attended, but this is where it becomes crucial. You must define your subject before you can fully present a clear and compelling outline of the whole essay. As a rule, the definition of your subject must be somewhat definitive in order to provide an element of tension or resolution to your overall argument. You must set a major contrast between your subject and the central theme of your essay, so that the reader should be compelled to keep reading if they are to remain on the topic of your synthesis. However, you must also remember that you do not have to give your readers all of the answers to your questions; the subject will be addressed in the body of your essay. At this point, you will want to develop an original thesis statement, but you must be careful about giving away what it is that you believe to be the case. If you really need to give your reader an answer to a question, then you should tell them at the end of your essay; otherwise, leave the idea open. The best way to approach your subject is to consider what your subject is, or what it is that you wish to achieve from the analysis of it. If your subject is to prove that certain claims about science are false, then you will want to establish your position, and your analysis of your topic, as being supported by the evidence that you present in your essay. In order to make sure that your analysis provides clear proof of the main problem, you will want to be very specific about how you will proceed in your argument. Instead of simply stating that you 'disagree' with someone's theory, you will want to outline your specific argumentation as to why it is, in fact, untrue. At this point, you will find that it is much easier to keep your reader interested in your work, because instead of merely repeating your factual statements, you now have something to consider. You have established your position, and you have given it a direction, but you still do not know exactly what you think, or where you want to go with your essay. You will still need to develop an outline that provides a suitable starting point for the development of your subject matter, and it is at this point that you should finally present a clear definition of the topic that you are writing about. Having this in mind, it is then possible to start writing your synthesis essay topics as you choose.
